What does Practice
Development mean for Admiral Nursing?
for dementia is
committed to the continuous process of practice development
for Admiral Nursing.
This is seen as an inclusive process in which the needs of
all those involved are considered i.e. families affected by
dementia, Admiral Nurses, other professionals/colleagues etc.
in developing practice which is appropriate, reflexive and
responsive.
A practice development strategy for Admiral Nursing has been
developed through consultation with a wide range of stakeholders
and informed by expert opinion.
The ultimate
purpose/aim of Practice Development for Admiral Nursing is
seen as:

and competencies in order to deliver, inform and influence
evidence based care for people with dementia and their
families/friends |
It is considered this is best achieved through focused
structured processes that create opportunities for reflection,
sharing knowledge and skills and enable practitioners to
develop their competencies.
Admiral Nurse Practice is currently defined within the Admiral
Nurse Competency Framework. Practice development will contribute
towards further development and validation of this framework.
The main objectives for Admiral
Nurse Practice
development are
summarised as follows:
1. To influence the delivery of care for people with dementia
and their carers in line with national standards and policies
and providing evidence for best practice in dementia care
2. To provide a framework for supporting the development
of Admiral Nurse practice which reflects the perspectives
of family carers and people with dementia
3. To facilitate the sharing of knowledge gained from work
experience through structured reflection and developing
actions from learning
4. To support Admiral Nurses in developing their competencies
in order to provide best practice for family carers and
people with dementia
5. To promote and support the dissemination of innovations
in Admiral Nurse practice in a systematic way i.e. which
builds upon previous experiences in a structured way
6. To demonstrate how Admiral Nursing contributes towards
improving health and care of people with dementia and their
families/friends in local health communities
How is Admiral
Nurse Practice Development supported?
for dementia funds
and supports a Practice Development Admiral Nurse team which
provides a structure for the delivery of the Admiral Nurse
practice development strategy.
The Admiral Nurse Practice development team comprises a Lead
Practice Development Nurse and part time Regional Practice
Development Nurses for each region in which Admiral Nurses
are based.
Each Regional Practice Development nurse is responsible for
supporting approximately 10-12 nurses and is in turn supported
by the Lead Practice Development Nurse.
The Practice Development Team meets on regular basis to discuss
the implementation of the strategy, share and disseminate
local initiatives, develop knowledge and skills, evaluate
processes and outcomes and use this information to further
develop the work of Admiral Nursing.
Admiral Nurse Practice development is supported
and facilitated through:
a. Monthly practice development days which comprise:
Clinical Group supervision, practice support and sessions
targeting specific areas of practice development as
determined locally.
b. National Admiral Nurse Forums:
Forum in which Admiral Nurses share and develop best practice.
c. Local practice development projects and forums:
Local forums and/or projects in which Admiral Nurse lead and
support the development of practice with local stakeholders.
d. Individual Admiral Nurse practice development:
Individual support for Admiral Nurses supported by a critical
companionship framework in developing a range of knowledge,
skills and competencies.
